Wanaka Area

As we are based in Wanaka, Aotearoa, for the winter season, RA hopes to increase awareness among Snowriders about how different locations, shops, and ski fields stack up in their impact on the environment. Throughout this season (2013), RA will be conducting simple, grassroots and community-based research to better inform some of the seasonal employees and riders that come to Wanaka on their environmental choices in the area.

Ski Fields:
While Cardrona does not have any information on their website about environmental sustainability, or on their environmental practices (and have so far refused to comment), we can only direct riders towards the Treble Cone environmental page, and cannot (as of now) make a valid comparison.

Social Stuff:
Buying new gear is always exciting. Unfortunately, it creates a continuous drain on the environment (many old garments and gear go into the rubbish bin, ending up in landfills all over the world, not to mention the resources many companies use to make new cloths every year, often without any sustainability policy) and socially (many companies outsource production to different countries, often termed 'developing nations,' to reduce cost, and benefit from governments who don't uphold environmentally or socially sustainable practices). We have a choice in the matter. Who to buy from (RA will be ranking different companies throughout the season, check the 'Awareness' section), and what to do with pre-loved gear.

One of the benefits to hanging out in Wanaka is, of course, Wanaka Wastebusters. This amazing group of people, and the fantastic service they provide the Wanaka community, is a must for used clothing, dropping it off or picking it up, and they handle all of your recycling needs. Check them out.
